Bunk to Trundle

Bunk to Trundle 1Our guests have expressed a slight remis at our boys bedroom bunk bed.  It is wonderful for kids but not so nice for adults.  It’s just unstable enough to make bunking on top an adventure and a climb for a full-sized adult.

So here’s my fix.  First I cut it down to size:

Then I took the wood from the lower part and reinforced the upper part:

I also sanded the feet and varathaned them so its easy to move.  Then I painted the mattress support board and installed it:

Next I created a box to fill in the void space that the regular twin mattress leaves. This can hold fun things for boys and a second pillow for the trundle bed stored below:

As you can see, I also created a slider board that just fits the mattress that can be used to store the lower mattress under the bed completely made and ready to go.  And finally, we have a trundle bed to sleep one or two:

Problem solved!  Yay!
