Hugel-Kultur is a German gardening system where wood is buried under a garden to provide a reservoir of water and minerals for the garden.
Since we have been thinning our forest we had the perfect opportunity to try this out.
Sam Hohmann, our excavator dude, had the equipment to dig a nice big hole and place some of our unsalable white-fir logs into the ground for us.
It will take several years before the fruits of this effort will show.
Here are some shots of this exciting project at Lifewater Ranch:
how did the hugel-kulture experiment turn out 8 years later?
Just FYI: The area is a bit far from the house and we haven’t planted anything there for years. I was considering trying to start a peach tree but the winters have been getting harsher and I am not sure it will survivie. There are several holes in the ground from settling and I think we put the wood too deep to benefit any normal garden plants. Still, I think it has potential.
